I have a dear close friend in the Lord, a very wonderful consecrated brother in Christ to this day. He told me when he was first saved many years ago that shortly after he was regenerated( born anew by God's Spirit) that he and was wife(recently saved also) were at home , not even in a church meeting, and the Spirit came upon them and they both began to speak in tounges. Previous to this he hadn't even heard of such a thing of speaking in tounges and had no idea of its existance.

If tounges have ceased as a manifistation of the Spirit of the Lord then please explain how this could have happened.

I think these people have done their homework on this subject, far superior to any I have seen.

Soaring Eagle,

I gave up part 1 before reading half of it. It seemed to me he makes many assumptions that are not well supported.

Example: He asserts the "disciples" (apostles?) received the Holy Spirit when Jesus breathed on them (John 20:21-22). In v.21 Jesus tells them He is sending them. In v.22 the NKJV says "He breathed on them, and said to them, receive the Holy Spirit". The Greek word lambano, here translated receive literally means take. The passage can just as easily be understood as Jesus sending them and telling them to take the Spirit as they go, not that the received the Spirit at that moment.

Which is correct? Consider again John who informs us in John 7:39 "But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified." Also Jesus says in John 16:7 "It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you." Did the apostles receive the Holy Spirit before Jesus was glorified and before He ascended? Does the Apostle contradict himself?

Whether Paul was saved on the road to Damascus or after he arrived is not at all certain nor can it be proven that Paul received the Spirit at the time Ananias laid hands on him and he received his sight. If Paul was saved on the road to Damascus, why did Ananias tell him, Acts 22:16, to "arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord"? Doesn't this sound like something Paul "must do"? If Paul was to receive the Holy Spirit at the time Ananias laid hands on him, why does Jesus say to Ananias (Acts 9:12) "...he (Paul) has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight."? Why no mention of this as the occasion of the reception of the Spirit? Could it be (gasp!) that the Holy Spirit would be received when he was baptized? Again in Acts 22:13 we find Ananias telling Paul "Brother Saul, receive your sight", again with no mention of Paul receiving the Spirit when his sight was restored.

There is no place where we are informed of the moment Paul received the Holy Spirit. One says when Ananias laid his hands on him, I say when he was baptized, with a least as much sciptural support.

http://www.preteristsite.com/docs/peoplestongues.html
Very interesting and well done article! Apparently a paper presented at a conference. He mentioned another speaker to follow him who would present related ino. I found the website but could not find this article or any article by a subsequent speaker. How did you find it?

Thanks, Homer

Is also wisdom, knowledge, Faith done away with? Why would the tools be done away with to fight the prince of the power of the air?
