Homer,

I do intend to respond to your reply. I am sorry it has taken so long, but my work schedule is hectic. I am a surgical resident, so I work long hours and take call frequently. When I have the time, I will write you back.

I would also enjoy hearing Steve's opinion on the matter.

Take care, Homer

Could you clarify your understandings of the "sins washed away" wording?

act 10:44-47 baptisim of holy spirit prior to water baptisi

Post by _Jim » Thu Apr 20, 2006 4:56 am

Act 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. Act 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. Act 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Act 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

Is water baptisim neccesary? Here the Gentiles have already been baptised by the Holy Spirit prior to water baptisim? I would say thier sins are already gone through them coming to faith and believing the Lord and His promise.

Jim,

Or perhaps these gifts were given to Cornelius and friends, not as a result of their regeneration, but as a sign to Peter and his friends that Gentiles were to be welcomed into the church. If God makes no distinction between Jew and Gentile, Peter must not refuse baptism to the Gentiles.

Jim,

You might be interested in my post on Sunday, April 16 where I commented on this passage in Acts 10.

I, for one, have read and reread you post, Homer.

Excellent! So well expressed and explained!

An anecdote

Post by _Ely » Mon Apr 24, 2006 6:16 am

I got this from a CofC site. (I don't agree with everything they say on this site - especially with regard to re-baptism) but this anecdote may be of us to some of you:

A preacher goes to preach the Gospel to some African Bushmen who have never heard the name or story of Jesus Christ. The preacher gathers the group together and he begins to speak. But just as he opens his mouth a guerilla fighting a civil war enters the hut and sprays everyone with gunfire. Everybody dies. If the preacher had been able to preach his sermon, the Bushmen would have believed and repented. But since none of this ever happened (and faith is a requirement for salvation), what happens to the Bushmen? According to “faith alone” teaching— where do they go?

For those that believe “faith alone” saves, the answer to this question HAS to be the same exact answer as the answer to, “What happens to a person if they die before they are baptized?”

Here is another view, a booklet on line, and a pretty thorough study:

It's not essential, but it is commanded and should be performed if possible.
Also, can a deathbed convert be admitted to heaven without it?
Under certain circumstances, yes - look at the thief on the cross.
