Convictions given by Satan

Post by Julian » Fri Sep 12, 2008 8:09 am

Do you think it is possible for Satan to put convictions in a person? I know the Bible states he is the accuser, but what exactly happens when he accuses us--are they convictions, almost like the feeling of our conscience convicting us?

i have always taken satan's accusing of the brethren to mean that he tries to instill feelings of unworthiness (e.g. "God could never forgive me;" "i'm not worthy," etc) in order to dissuade us from seeking after God.

Hi.
I agree with TK. As the accuser, Satan would bring condemnation. I wouldn't ascribe anything good to Satan; he is said to be a liar, murderer, and deceiving the whole world.

1Pe 5:8 Be sensible and vigilant, because your adversary the Devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking someone he may devour;

1Jn 3:8 He who practices sin is of the Devil, for the Devil sins from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was revealed, that He might undo the works of the Devil.

It is the Holy Spirit who brings conviction, to urge us toward repentance.

Joh 16:8 And when that One comes, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment.

Like TK said, I think one thing Satan can do is tempt us to doubt God. Doubt that He has forgiven us for our past sins. Or, if we sin as a Christian we may doubt God will forgive us for that. John says God will forgive us:

1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

This is also an interesting statement made by Paul:

1 Cor 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

Paul also said that we should not think trials are to be taken as evidence God has abandoned us:

1Th 3:1 Therefore, when we could no longer endure it, we thought it good to be left in Athens alone,
1Th 3:2 and sent Timothy, our brother and minister of God, and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith,
1Th 3:3 that no one should be shaken by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that we are appointed to this.
1Th 3:4 For, in fact, we told you before when we were with you that we would suffer tribulation, just as it happened, and you know.
1Th 3:5 For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor might be in vain.

I think these are some of the ways Satan can attack us.
He will not fail nor be discouraged till He has established justice in the earth. (Isaiah 42:4)
