The kingdom.

Post by _brody_in_ga » Mon Feb 27, 2006 12:13 pm

As me and my wife were going through Acts 1 last night, we came across the verse 6 where it is said "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Isreal?"

It seems that the Apostles were assuming that Jesus would restore a literal kingdom to Isreal. I am perplexed on this issue because I find scriptures that seem to indicate that the kingdom is here now, and yet there are versus that seem to imply it is yet future. Anybody want to discuss this and "help a brother out"lol. Thanks.

You'll probably get a better answer than this one later but it seems to me that his answer when they asked this question indicated that the Kingdom of Christ was about to begin to be a dynamic thing. They were about to receive power to witness effectively to the world.

Acts 1:6-8
6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
(KJV)

Seeing that they were still a little foggy about what the Kingdom really was about, Jesus sort of gave them an answer that said "You'll understand this better in a few days when you are baptized with the Holy Ghost and you'll understand what I mean by a "kingdom".

That's just how I understand this conversation with Jesus and His disciples, hope that helped a little....

I think both are true

The kingdom is here now in the sense that Jesus has won the victory and reigns in heaven and in the hearts of believers here on earth. The kingdom is yet future b/c one day His kingdom will be expanded to include everything.

The Bible teaches how the kingdom is a growing thing. It starts out small like the mustard seed and becomes something great. Same is true with the Daniel 2 depiction of the little stone which is the kingdom and then in Chapter 7, I think, where it takes on a new size. I agree that the kingdom is here and now and will continue to mature until the day our Lord returns.

Thanks for everyones answers. It is obvious from scripture that the kingdom issue is very important. It was preached by Jesus and every Apostle. A question to everyone here is: When we "preach the kingdom" to people, what do we say to them? The kingdom is "here and near"? I am curious because there seems to be conflicting versus on the subject. I know that they can be reconciled, but it just isn't occuring to me right now. For instance:

Luk 17:20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
Luk 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

Col 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated [us] into the kingdom of his dear Son:

1Cr 15:24 Then [cometh] the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

Could you please comment on this Steve? I listened to your series on this, but I still have some general questions like the one above. Thanks for this awesome site.

It doesn't sound like those verses are in conflict to me. It might be important to remember that the Jews were expecting a literal kingdom like in the days of David. At the time they were under Roman rule so this was an attractive scenerio. Jesus was simply correcting them in saying that the kingdom is a spiritual one, like the reference in Luke 17.

Like Steve said in his lecture series, the kingdom is made up of subjects whose king is God. As more and more believers come into the kingdom, it grows and fills the whole Earth. When the kingdom is "full" then Jesus will turn it over to his Father. I'm not sure what that means, but it may just be a symbolic gesture saying, "I have bought these people and I'm giving them back to my Father." At that point, I believe everything that is not eternal will pass away and what remains is a kingdom and their reward. This is my understanding of the kingdom and its fulfillment, based on the various scriptures. No doubt Steve will have more insight.

A question to everyone here is: When we "preach the kingdom" to people, what do we say to them?
The same thing that John the Baptizer, Jesus, Paul, and Peter said when they preached the kingdom:

"Repent (Change your mind about the way you are living) and be baptized."

After Jesus was raised from the dead, and the Holy Spirit was given, Peter added: "... in the name of Jesus Christ, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
