I find Judas very interesting. I was reading through the accounts leading up to Jesus' betrayal some time recently, and was struck with the thought from some of the dialogue that maybe Judas was throwing himself on the sword, so to speak, knowingly and that it may have been his role to play and that he sacrificed himself in a way to ensure God's plan was carried out. It's a real conundrum to me in any event.

Jesus seems to really come down hard on Judas ("But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.” Mt 26:24). Something about what Judas did was worse than Peter's denial, although I am not 100% sure what it was, other than it was premeditated.

Peter was just in self survival mode whereas Judas allowed himself to be used as a tool for Satan to keep mankind in the kingdom of darkness. I don't think Judas is in eternal hell but i think the mental torment from the memory of what he did will be with him for a long time.

I'm open to various thoughts about where Judas is now or where he will be for eternity

But I've always taken Acts 1:24-25 in a negative sense

24 Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.”

It just seems to me that Peter is not saying something good about Judas here. Granted, if my reading of his tone/meaning is correct, that only tells us where PETER thought Judas was. It doesn't necessarily tell us where God knew he was.

Good point Mattrose! The NKJV says "which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place"
This is the kind of statement where the reader may read into it what he already believes.

And Acts 1:25 has also been said to refer not to Judas but to Mathias.

Well, why would hell be Judas' "own place" any more than any one else's "own place" who might go there? I think the "own place" to which Luke refers is the grave. (I know, you want to fire my own question back to myself. "In what sense is the grave Judas' "own place" any more than anyone else. We all end up there.")

So because of my thought that the reference is the grave as well as my other beliefs about the after-life, I also have a different answer to the question title of this thread: Is Judas in heaven or hell?

My answer: He is neither in heaven or hell. He is dead! When he is raised from the dead, God will judge him with a just judgment. In my opinion he will have to undergo some correction in hell before he truly repents and comes under the authority of Christ. But I could be wrong.
Paidion

Man judges a person by his past deeds, and administers penalties for his wrongdoing. God judges a person by his present character, and disciplines him that he may become righteous.

I agree Peter meant he was in the grave because if he thought Judas was in eternal hell would'nt he warn others non stop about ending up where Judas is? However Jesus said it would have been better if Judas was never born which to me is a stumbling block against believing CU. It does'nt mean most people can't ultimately be saved but maybe not everyone.
