I don't know if this is the correct way of looking at it, but to me it gives the connotation of "worship of self"; an inordinate pride in our own achievements - the religion of humanism perhaps?
For example, I usually enjoy watching some of the Australian Open Tennis (currently on), but have observed, and at times even felt uncomfortable at some of the evident self-obsession & seeming idolatry; this seems more obvious these days than in previous times.
But perhaps it's always been there, & only my perceptions have changed.
