Book List

Post by _Erich » Sat Dec 29, 2007 12:13 am

Being a part of this forum and listening to Steve I have been blessed to pick up on some books that I have never heard of before (one that really stands out for me is “The Christians Secret of a Happy Life” By Hannah Whitall Smith). I was wondering if anyone would like to share either a few or a list of books or authors that they have been blessed by. It could be on any topic or in any style.

Thanks,
Erich <><

i've said it elsewhere on the forum, but to me "The Pursuit of God" by Tozer is essential. It is available free online.

I also enjoy reading articles written by Leonard Ravenhill. They are also available on line. He's a hard hitter, but sometimes that is what we need.

Everything by George MacDonald (1824-1905) has blessed me, enriched me, and brought me in submission to Christ at a deeper level.

In particular I wish to recommend:

The Hope of the Gospel

Unspoken Sermons (Series One)

Unspoken Sermons (Series Two)

Unspoken Sermons (Series Three)

Thanks so far for all the replies! Again a lot of these are new names and titles and I am excited to check some out. Hopefully this thread will grow and be a blessing to others too.

George MacDonald's works are free on line. Of his non-fiction, I find "The Wise Woman" particularly good - I wish I had read it when my child was young!

I found "The Anabaptist Vision" by Harold Bender to be priceless to my search for understanding of Christianity and of Church history. It is short - and it is found at this site - http://www.goshen.edu/mhl/Refocusing/d-av.htm

What can I say - Art Katz - here are the links.

Be blessed - Jepne

Below is a link to three chapters that have been deleted from one of Hannah Whitall Smith's books.

thanks, Jepne for the mention of Art Katz. I wish that more of his audio teachings were transcribed. When I read Apostolic Foundations, I really had to concentrate. He speaks on a very deep level in that book.

The best Tozer book I've ever read -- out of print and hard to find, but it's a book of essays called "God Tells The Man Who Cares"

My presently reading queue:

The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life, Hannah Whitall Smith
Organic Church, Neil Cole
Genesis Unbound, John Sailhammer
The Myth of a Christian Nation, Gregory Boyd
Everyday Theology, Kevin Vanhoozer
God of the Possible, Gregory Boyd

One book I also wanted to mention, for both sentimental and practical reasons, is "The Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes" by Kenneth Taylor. My mom read this to me when i was a little tike, and then I got it for my kids. The older version I had contained vivid, older style pictures that still stick with me to this day. the updated version, i believe, now uses more cartoonish drawings, which i believe is a mistake.

At any rate, I credit this book with introducing me to the stories in the Bible, and also the great truths of the faith. To this day when I read portions of the Bible, I think back to how the stories were told in that children's book, and the accopanying picture.

If you can find an older copy, I highly recommend it.
