Was Jesus born with the capability to sin?

Post by _Jim » Tue Sep 26, 2006 4:57 am

I ask this since some people say that sin is passed from father to child hence why Jesus was born of a virgin.

I think this is an error.

My reasoning is thus. I believe the virgin birth was only a prophetic sign. Jesus had to live as we did, with all the temptations to sin, but He being obedient to the Father didn't sin. It was this obedeance that made Jesus the perfect sacrafice for our sins.

Any thoughts on this?

Jim

It is appointed for man once to die. Jesus was not excluded from this as we see but we also know the devineness of His nature. Jesus, while on earth, was confined to His fleshly form. He had a destiny and He came to fulfill that destiny. He satisified both requirements.

He got tired and hungry and even angry at the Pharisees so he had human attributes therefore it seems he would be truly tempted to sin just as Hebrews says.

this topic was discussed quite at length not long ago under Misc theol topics, under two headings "the temptation of christ" and "is a sin nature biblical?"

you might want to check those out as well.

I disagree with you on this matter Jim. The brass serpent that Moses held up for the healing of the snake bitten Isrealites was a type of Christ. Christ did not have a sin nature like us. The virgin birth was far more then just a prophetic sign. The virgin birth was God comming into flesh, only this flesh had no sin and was suitable to be the brass serpent. Are you suggesting that Jesus had a sinful nature but that he just didn't live it out?

Adam wasn't created with a sinful nature; he acquired one. He was created innocent. His descendents presumably were all born with sinful natures.

Jesus is called the "second Adam". Could it be that Jesus was born into this world innocent with no sinful nature?

No doubt Jesus "was tempted in all points such as we are, yet without sin." Adam on the other hand was tempted to eat the forbidden fruit, but succumbed.

I don't think one ought to appeal to Jesus Divinity in order to support his being born innocent. According to the apostle Paul, He divested Himself of all His divine attributes when He became man (Philippians 2:6,7). The only thing He retained was His identity.
