Hi MLH-
selfish ambition is the opposite of what is outlined in v.17: But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

I just want to add that Judas attitude can be considered selfish ambition.
When he betrayed Christ.

I think it means following our own goals and desires and not making Him Lord. I don't read anything deep or complex into it. Maybe I'm just shallow that way though.

The Greek word is "erithea". Here is a note from the Online Bible's definition of the word:
T"his word is found before NT times only in Aristotle where it denotes a self-seeking pursuit of political office by unfair means. (A&G) Paul exhorts to be one in the mind of Christ not putting self forward or being selfish (#Php 2:3). #Jas 3:14 speaks against having selfishness or self-promoting in your heart. (Wayne Steury)"

James speaks about the dangers that come with trials..Besides failing to place our trust in the Lord and not enduring, James speaks of prejudice,
improper speech, judging one another, leaving God out of our plans
and bitterness.
I know God must be speaking to me personally on these issues
as I seem to go back to this book.
