Federal Vision

Post by _Ely » Wed Jun 27, 2007 5:29 pm

Hey guys,

I stumbled across this term on sermonaudio. I found some sermon titles which were ferociously condemning something called Federal Vision. Having looked into it, it seems that there is quite a furore in Reformed circles over FV. Having read the Wikipedia entry on it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Vision), these FV people seem to be on to something.

What do you guys know of FV, and what do you make of it?

When I debated Doug Wilson on Calvinism, in 2001, I had no idea what his theology was on other points, such as Federal Vision. In the debate, he surprised me by saying that a person might be elect "for a while," but ultimately lost. I did not understand his remark then, and do not understand it now. However, I believe that the Federal Vision view is that a person is "elect" simply by virtue of being born and baptized into the church, but that not all who are elect in this sense are actually elect in the ultimate sense of perseverance. I think this is Calvinism gone wild.

I agree with you Steve,

But I think it's at least a good thing that these guys are at least taking the warning passages seriously. I am also happy to see their focus on the communal nature of the New Covenant. I'd like to see whether there are any non-Calvinists who have a similar approach.
