my parents did, & were promptly removed from membership! (this was many years ago in Croatia, not sure if still happens). Actually I know of a large charismatic babptist church in Melbourne.TK asks - why don't spirit filled dispensational baptists pray in tongues?
Romans 8:26,27Homer said - I do not understand the purpose of praying in tongues…but wouldn't it be simpler and more enlightening for the Holy Spirit to inspire the person to pray, as appropriate for the need, in his own language?...
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
An instance that I experienced: I was relaxing at home one evening, when I suddenly felt an overwhelming urgency to pray for a friend from church. I had absolutely no idea what I was to pray for; I (fervently) prayed in tongues for maybe 20 minutes, when the 'burden' lifted. I later found she had been in hospital in labour for a very prolonged time. At the time I was prompted to pray, a different doctor intervened & organised an emergency caesarean, without which there was a real possibility of both mother & baby dying.
I'm sure God could have organised all this in English, but He didn't! God's prerogative to do things any way He likes, even if we don't understand why lots of times?
I think it may be a matter of trust -TK also said - how can i know for sure that if i ever do speak in tongue, that it's of the HS? but my fear is that this lingering doubt may prevent the legitimate gift being granted.
Luke 11:11,13
"Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he?...if you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"
(I am not saying that speaking in tongues is the only evidence or even the initial evidence of being filled with the Spirit, but if that is what one was specifically praying for, then this verse should also apply).
In my experience (I was a member of AOG, now am in a non-denominational house chuch; most have gift of tongues, but not all) -My biggest beef at the time (and stil is), is that people think it is so 'spiritual' to pray for others in tongues.. I don't think it is Biblical, and I also think it is more beneficial for the person if they understand what you pray for them about.. that way they can be encouraged as you pray...

if praying for someone, often would start in tongues but then always also pray in English.
Also at prayer meetings, I find if I pray in tongues (quietly) I would often be given specific direction in how to then pray in English. But I do agree, especially when praying in company or for someone, we should 'pray in the Spirit' and also 'pray with understanding'.
