Paidion,

You said: "Let's see. The gospel was preached to the dead. These dead must have been 'unbelievers' or they would not have needed the gospel preached to them. "

Not so simple. How could they be preached to if they were dead? Could it mean it was preached to those dead, at the time Peter wrote, while they were alive? Or could it be a reference to spiritually dead? And why no mention of any future preaching to those who will die in the future; seems like a good opportunity to say this. And are the dead preached to before the ressurection and judgement or after?

Paul in Romans 14:10-12 indicates confession will be made by all at the last judgement. Are they preached to before the resurrection but not allowed to confess who Jesus is until after?

So many questions regarding this passage!

I am personally in the opinion that there is no such place as purgatory. I believe that we grow in Christ as much as we are personally able in this life. I believe in death we wait in paradise for the coming judgments, of course those of us who have faith face a diffrent judgment then those not written in the book of life. I also believe that we are perfected through Christ by faith. Scripture says there will be no sin or tears so the temptations to sin will be gone somehow but I don't see how I could ever attain perfection except through Christ. Paul clearly teaches that we live, die then judgment not live, die, purgatory then judgment.

Ok this is off the top of my head at 2:50am or so in the morning :P so don't tear into me to much :D

God Bless,

jim

Attention: Contest

Who can find a passage of scripture that affirms that unbelievers can be sanctified after death? The winner will be awarded a free tape from: http://www.charityministries.org/
Homer, Loaves announced a contest. I found a passage which affirms that unbelievers can be sanctified after death. That fact remains, regardless of the complexities relating to the passage.

I would be glad to address some of the questions you asked, if you wish.
The answers, whatever they may be, are irrelevant to the challenge of finding the scripture required.

Suppose the passage refers entirely to events which occurred in the past. In that case it shows that unbelievers can be sanctified after death, since some of them were, in fact, sanctified sometime in the past.
