As a practical example, rather than praying "Father, please heal my friend of this cancer if it be your will," we should lay our hands on our friend and say "cancer, in the name of Jesus, shrivel up and die(or something along those lines."

what do you all think about this?

This is Word of Faith teaching based on certain things like Mark 11.23-25 where Jesus says "say to the mountain be lifted up and cast into the sea"
and do not doubt it will be done. Believe you have received it even before it has been done by thanking God in advance. Don't use words expressing doubt like "if" because after all was'nt Zechariah's mouth zipped up when he doubted Elizabeth was pregnant with John.
I understand all the arguments against it but as a practical matter i try to follow this method because sometimes in the bible things do work that way and if they don't then i accept God's sovereign will, but i do believe that doubt is the devil's entree.

Let me know if it works for you.
i am not sure if my unbelief (which i view as different from not having faith) will allow it to work for me. too many years in non-charismatic circles.

thus, i agree with steve7150 that unbelief can be a faith stealer.

i heard a quote recently: "I'd rather aim at the stars and hit the moon, than aim at nothing and succeed every time."

i think that applies here somewhere.

We have a friend who was a missionary in India for many years. We asked him about healings and such over there, and he said that when he prayed for people they were healed about 50% of the time. He didn't know why some were healed and some weren't, it just seemed to be about 50/50. So he just prayed for anyone who asked and left it up to the Lord.

If I remember correctly, he also said that although he has seen healings in America, it is no where close to what he saw in India.

i agree, rae. coincidentally, my church just recently received this email from a missionary in bangladesh:
Praise the Lord that he is doing great things right now in Khulna City . More than three thousand people including Hindu & Muslim attended our revival meeting. Most non-Christian people came to heal. Today evening many accepted Christ as their personal Savior and the Lord. I do not have exact number since I did not check comments card, but I saw that many came forward to receive Him. Praise after prayer, there was a long queue to give testimony. Many sick people healed immediately including dumb, eye sight problem, asthma, different kind of pain in body etc. This revival meeting will continue till tomorrow. Ask God to open people’s heart to receive him and great miracles that can bring more glory to him.
since my pastor is decidely non-charismatic, i am anxious to talk to him about what he thinks of these miracles that we never seem to see in our church.
