Israel at War

Since Jesus fully represents God, how do we reconcile His non-coercive character with a seemingly coercive God in the Old Testament? See the conquests of Joshua (such as Joshua 11:16-23) and many other OT passages about God fighting for the nation of Israel.

God has many facets to His personality and being. He is not just the God of love and grace. He is also holy and righteous. And the totality of God's being and person must and will be upheld in all of creation.

John 1:17 " For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."

The law reflects the righteous and holy character of God. The righteousness and holiness of God must not be violated. If it is violated then His very nature demands retribution upon the violator and the demonstration of God's righteousness to the universe.

Now this wonderful God found a way to maintain His righteous nature and still reach out to the fallen creation. "Behold, The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!"(Jn.1:29)

Now we who came from the fallen race can participate in and experience the other aspects of God's person. "Grace and truth came by Jesus Christ."

Romans 3 25-26 tell us, "whom God set forth to be a propitiation by his blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus."

In the Old Testiment before the coming of the Lamb of God I personally believe that the demonstration of God's righteous judgement upon fallen man is seen in many of His dealings with fallen humanity. It may seem like a contradiction to the revelation of God in the New Testiment but it isn't at all. The difference is that "grace and truth came by Jesus Chrst" and He opened up for us the wonderfulness of God revealed in the New Testiment.

It was a different covenant much more of the flesh verses the New Covenant which is much more of the Spirit. And in the jewish age it was important for the jewish nation to be preserved at all costs so that Jesus would come at his apponted time to a jewish nation.
It was the same God just a different age.
