I imagine the reference would be Luke 3:23. The verse itself could be interpreted variously.

Yes, the genealogies in Matthew and Luke differ from each other. Harmonizers have various ways by which they account for that.

Matthew 1:15-16 Matthan father of Jacob father of Joseph. Luke 3:23 Joseph the son of Heli the son of Mattat the son of, etc.
Joseph was the son in law of Heli since the geneology in Luke is Mary's bloodline.
