Along the same lines as what Anochria said, here is something that was said, I think, by Steve Sjogren:
Don't go to start a church; go to serve a city. Serve them with love. And if you go after the people nobody wants, you'll end up with the people everybody wants."

all excellent points-- yes anochria that is the whole thing. it is too narrow. i am trying get my church to change it (or do away with it) or at least correct the grammar! i think the denomination wants the churches to have a vision statement, which is why we have one.

every time i see it printed on our bulletin i cringe.

being unique

Speaking as a pastor, there is an intense pressure upon churches/ church leaders to try and be unique and "cutting edge". It's almost insane. And it's a bad byproduct of "vision statement"itis. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying vision statements are necessarily evil or anything.

But still, I feel like we easily get bored with the basics of what a church should be and then run off trying to create special niches for ourselves. Again, specialized ministries are great, but not at the expense of the fundamental and basic functions and callings of the church (word, sacrament, community, outreach/service, prayer, discipleship)

In our church experience, we shied away from a vision statement in favor of a "values statement". But that's just one approach.

BTW, I love your tagline verse. It's one of my absolute favorites.

thanks, anochria- that's one of my fave verses too, which is why it's my tagline! however, you reminded me that i've been meaning to change it to something different for a while, so i'm going to do so.

And, of course, that's another of my favorites!

As I read the original, it sounds as if someone not attending a particular building, probably on Sundays between 10 am and noon, is not contemporary, caring or credible. From the second part of the statement I get the impression that those who do attend possess God's love, can give it away to the non-possessing non-attenders and can meet the needs that God obviously is not meeting. How can I attend church when I'm never out of the church? Should I amputate myself?
