Recommended Resources

Post by mattrose » Thu Sep 16, 2010 6:48 pm

Steve, I know you were in the process of writing a '3 views of hell' book and that it got sidetracked with your school. I am considering writing a thesis paper on this subject and was wondering if you could share which resources your found most helpful in research.

In Christ,
matthew

This is a good one written by Hosea Ballou.

An Examination Of The Doctrine Of Future Retribution: In Connection With The Moral Nature Of Man, The Principle Of Analogy And The Sacred Scriptures

Matt,

I collected about 25 books from the various views, but only got about half off them read before being sidetracked. I can't vouch for the ones I have not read. Of those I have read, here is a list (I have also read quite a few online resources):

Traditional View:

Hell Under Fire (Christopher Morgan, ed.)
Hell on Trial (Robert A. Peterson)
Death and the Afterlife (Robert Morey)
Repent or Perish! (John Gerstner—the worst book I have read on the subject)

Conditional Immortality

Evangelical Essentials (a good chapter by John R. W. Stott)
Across the Spectrum (Greg Boyd)
Facing Hell (John Wenham)

Universal Reconciliation

The Inescapable Love of God (Talbot)
What Does The Bible Really Say About Hell? (Randy Klassen)
The Restitution of All Things, by Andrew Jukes, is, I believe available to be read online and is supposed to be excellent. I have not done as much reading on this view yet. I was saving it for last.

General

Four Views on Hell (William Crockett, ed., a good chapter by Clark Pinnock)
The Problem of Pain (C.S. Lewis)
The Great Divorce (C.S. Lewis)
Universal Salvation: The Current Debate (several authors interact with Talbot, who defends his position admirably)

I just received from Amazon two universalist books that look very interesting (don't know how soon I will be able to read them). One is called: "The Evangelical Universalist", by Gregory MacDonald (a pseudonym). The other is called: "Universalism: The Prevailing Doctrine of the Christian Church During Its First Five-Hundred Years (1899), by John Wesley Hanson. Glancing through this one, it looks like it has a lot of quotes from the church fathers (as one would expect, given the title).

I'm reading "Christian Universalism, God's good news for all people" by Eric Stetson. He argues with scripture,God's character and logic very well and it's a short book.

Has anyone read this book, The Restitution of All Things? My uncle converted to the universal reconciliation view after reading it. Now it seems to work its way into every theological discussion he has. I was thinking about getting a copy (although I doubt it will convince me of universalism). I'm just curious to know if anyone has taken the time to read it.

Hi Matt,

Here is a good resource you can buy at Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Discussion-Doctri ... 212&sr=1-2

And here is another old debate you can download. Harvard University regards it as a classic debate on the subject:

God bless, Homer
