Consuming fire?

Post by 21centpilgrim » Thu Sep 24, 2009 9:51 pm

Heb 12:29 for our God is a consuming fire.

I brought out this verse to Steve on the radio a few months ago when we were discussing God's character and the views of hell. What if anything may this verse speak to God's character and the severity of His judgement toward sin? Not trying to proof text, just slipping in a quick question.
Then those who feared the LORD spoke with each other, and the LORD listened to what they said. In his presence, a scroll of remembrance was written to record the names of those who feared him and loved to think about him.

Mal 3:2
"But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner's fire And like launderer's soap.

The Lord's conusming fire consumes the impurities so that only the pure gold remains.

Isn't consuming different than refining?

It sounds like "consuming" would mean to destroy but again it could mean to destroy sin or to destroy for the purpose of building back up. So again we will see it as we understand other scripture about this subject.
