Hi all,

Can anyone recommend some good books on the atonement that teach the different views of it (governmental, penal substitution, etc...)?

Thanks in advance!

Derek Prince, who was a pentecostal... .. scholar (?) if you will, wrote a book on the atonement, called "Atonement". I can't say that he deals with issues you may be looking for and I have not read it, but he is a good read.

You can find an excellent article on the atonement at:

www.johnmarkhicks.faithsite.com

Click on "Academic Articles", then go to Oct. 11, 2000, "Atonement: A Biblical Theological Perspective". I have read many excellent articles and books by Hicks.

Hi, Derek,

One of my professors at George Fox Evangelical Seminary has written a book on rethinking the atonement, which will be published next month. I have not read the final edit of the text, but I have read draft material for it, and he has ideas that are worth thinking about. Dr. Shelton is critical of penal substitutionary theory (which is a seriously flawed model, from my own perspective).

Cross and Covenant: Interpreting the Atonement for 21st Century Mission by R. Larry Shelton

It's already on Amazon.

Shalom,
Emmet

"Seriously flawed". Good word choice. I discovered this some time ago, and am working on a booklet, of which I have posted initital drafts of 3 chapters. See "The Ultimate Sacrifice of Jesus Christ" under "Essays".
I will be interested in obtaining Dr. Shelton's book.

Here's an interesting viewpoint on the topic:

Here's another article that delineates the various views:

Also, there's a fantastic book entitled "The History of Christian Thought" by Jonathan Hill which gives a chronological overview of Christian theologians (from the 1st century to modern times) and the development of various areas of Christian theology, including the atonement.
