Cutting a Covenant (documentation of ancient examples?)

We were studying Genesis 15 today at church and the common refrain arose about the significance of early ancient near-east practices before that time. I've been we surfing for some time, and there are many assertions even specifying examples with names, etc., but I can't find a single site discussing the archaeological evidence and showing us how we know these things. Is anyone aware of such evidence/discussion of the documentation itself?
