A local flood?

Actually there are really difficult things to understand if one believes in an ark big enough to house a worldwide animal sample. Besides food and waste another obvious and practically difficult problem is where would the drinking water come from for all these animals and even 8 humans. For example an elephant washes down his food with 30-50 gallons of water daily so with 2 elephants they would use about 100 gallons daily or 36,500 gallons for a year which is the size of 2 swimming pools. Multiply these type of calculations over the population of animals just for water alone and it seems impossible.
I'm assuming the flood waters would be unsafe to drink especially for a year.

Good quesiton!

Answers in Genesis talks about the ark HERE and says:

"Drinking water would only have taken up 9.4 % of the volume (1.54 million cubic feet--given earlier in the article). This volume would be reduced further if rainwater was collected and piped into troughs."
