Old Testament Prisons

I listen to a pastor’s sermon on following Jesus’ commands. One thing he mentioned was how in Old Testament times if you were thrown in prison they didn’t feed you, give you water or medicine. So if someone from the outside didn’t meet your needs you died. He also mentioned that it is still this way in many 3rd world countries today.

His point was that in New Testament times if one of your brothers was thrown in prison for worshipping Christ, you had to be willing to care for him every day which would put you in danger of being thrown in prison for Christ as well.

I did a quick google on “treatment of prisoners” but didn’t find anything useful. Any ideas on where to look for knowledge of prison life in ancient times?

i am almost certain that Steve G mentioned this in one of his teachings, but unfortunately I do not recall which one.

you could possibly find some information here:

I've had this site bookmarked for a while, but never had time to explore. It sounds quite interesting.
