How important is truth?

Post by _Brad » Thu Sep 20, 2007 6:06 pm

I was reading someone give an opinion that in the church today, we focus too much on giving out the message and not enough on simply living out that message. The latter will draw more interest.

That may be true, but one thing he wrote was, "truth is not the most important thing".

My first reaction was disagreement; that truth is the most important thing. But I can't think of any Scriptures which directly back that up.

Is truth the most important thing? Seems like kind of a tough question.

I think love is the most important thing. One of the fruits of love is truth.

The word translated as "truth" in the NT is the Greek word "alātheia".
This word esentially means "reality" ----- and of course the truth about something reflects reality.

Is there anything more important than reality?

Love is a very important aspect of reality, but it is only one aspect.

I think so since Jesus said "I am the truth" as well as the way and the life. Therefore it seems to me, truth is the foundation of everything else for without it how can we trust anything that Jesus or Paul said about love or that Jesus truthfully died for our sins?

Hi Brad,

In what context did the writer say, "truth is not the most important thing"? The contrast in the first paragraph between giving out the message and living the message, makes it seem that "truth" means "information." If that's the context, I agree that there are more important things than information.

If by truth he means "seeking the truth," I think that's very important. Maybe it is the most important thing...I'm not sure.

After reviewing the context, I disagree even more:
"truth is important, but according to scripture, truth is not the only thing, or the most important thing. The most important thing is whether or not people are attracted to the truth; drawn into the truth, and able to understand and receive the truth."
I don't think Scripture anywhere says that the most important thing is whether people are attracted to the truth; in fact, just the opposite.

The Importance of Truth

For he will render to everyone according to his works: to those who by perseverance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and are not persuaded by the truth, but are persuaded by wickedness, there will be wrath and fury. Roman 2

Love is a very important aspect of reality, but it is only one aspect.
But if God is the ultimate reality, and God has been revealed as love, then love is reality.
"truth is important, but according to scripture, truth is not the only thing, or the most important thing. The most important thing is whether or not people are attracted to the truth; drawn into the truth, and able to understand and receive the truth."
I don't know the context in which this was said, but it almost sounds to me like he is trying to say that, as Christians, it is not enough to know the truth (of the Gospel) for ourselves; we must share the truth with others, and in a way that is winsome. Of course, I'm conjecturing wildly and could be way off the mark.

Danny,

Or...it's more important to always-love than to always-prove I'm right (?).
That one can be pretty tough for me at times....
(speshly since I'm not always....you know, right)....

STEVE7150,

Awesome to think of The Truth as "Someone" isn't it?
Okay, then: What Jesus sed.......Amen!

Disagreement between Christians over what the "truth" is regarding Christian doctrine must certainly be a big roadblock for someone considering becoming a disciple of Christ. A much more attactive reason to become a follower is when he/she sees our good works and glorifies God. Love your neighbor as yourself. :D
