Atleast the current Pope is man enough to be consistent with his faith.

We have our opinions and the Pope is entitled to his opinions. I respect his dedication to the principals that he believes are true but i think he should simply comment on the RCC and not cross the line by calling other churches defective.

But doesn't he
have to to remain consistent? If the Pope is the head of the church, and the RC Church is the one true church, then wouldn't it logicly follow that his comments are right on? I do not believe his claims, but atleast he is trying to be logical.

I agree with brody on this. If the Pope came out and said, "The RCC is the One True Church, but all y'all other churches are okay, too," it'd ring kinda hollow.
Of course, I disagree with him on it, but it makes sense for him to say it.
One thing I'm curious about is, was this an Ex Cathedra teaching? Meaning, infallible (according to Catholic dogma). Not sure how one tells.

There are lots of churches who think they have the market cornered on salvation. I have attended several in the past. The RCC carries more weight simply because they have so many members. Statements like this keep members from straying and keep donations coming in. It's a fear tactic. People are afraid of hell as commonly taught, and don't want to risk being tossed into Dante's Inferno.
Of course, it is probably true that Pope Benedict really believes it and is trying to help his flock. Good for him; if he believes it, then that is what he should be doing.

i would probably take a more cynical view, namely that he probably knows it ISNT true but says it is because he dare not say otherwise.

Then let's really call a spade a spade shall we. The Pope said other churches "don't have the means of salvation" therefore let's take it to the logical end and be consistent and say that other churches are not Christian. And if not Christian then they must be pagan churches because Christian churches have the means of salvation, namely following Christ.
You know what, the RCC is beginning to sound like a big cult.

I agree completly with your last sentence!!
But what I am really looking for, is how in the world are all the Catholic apologist going to deal with this in light of the statments from the last Pope?...I bet they are really scratching there heads now.

But Tim Staples already said something similar to this Pope. He said something like , you can't be saved outside of the RCC unless you have something like irrefutable ignorance.
Or something like that, just as it's written in the NT/ not.

The standard Catholic (apologist) line goes like this: "If you are saved, it's through the CC, whether you know it or not."
Okay.
