Hey folks,

This is a question which I have often thought about without really discussing it much. Following on from another thread, I'd love to get some ideas form you guys, using the following text as a starting-pint:

"God also has highly exalted [Jesus] and given him the name which is above every name, that at [Greek = en] the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." Philippians 2:9-11

So, what meaneth "the name of Jesus"?

Shalom
Ely

The meaning of "Yeshua" (Jesus) is "Yahweh saves".

The Father and the Son share the name "Yahweh". Two Individuals each of which is called "Yahweh" are mentioned in Gen 19:24, one on earth that spoke with Abraham, and whom Abraham addressed as Yahweh, through whom another Individual, Yahweh in heaven rained fire and brimstone on Sodom and Gomorrah.

Then Yahweh rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Yahweh out of heaven. Gen 19:24

Hey Paidion.

I don't think in this context "the name of Jesus" is a reference to audible/written thing. I'm inclined to think of the idea of the name of Jesus as being a reference to his power and authority to rule.

Please excuse me. I should have realized that you were not asking that question in isolation.

Ely,

That is exactly how the concept of name is used in Both the OT and NT. "Name" refers to one's character, power, and authority. even today it is used in that manner. when an official declares theiur authority to do something "in the name of" country, state, etc.
