I was so aware reading Matthew the way Jesus spoke to the Pharisee's,
S, and his disciples at times. Can anyone explain any reasoning behind this? Did he really want them to understand something or like us here
were they just "reasoning among themselves"?

I focused on words such as hypocrites, dull of hearing, ye of little faith etc,

thanks

IMO, jesus spoke to the pharisees the way he did because they knew exactly who he was but refused to honor him as messiah, because this would result in the loss of their power. in other words, they deserved to be spoken to this way.

i always took Jesus' seemingly harsh words to the disciples as an attempt to spur them on to greater things, to shake them out of their traditional ways of thinking about things. if you think about it, they had an awful lot thrown at them in a few years time.
