I had some JW's over, and asked them if they would leave the Watchtower if the Bible was shown to contradict their teaching, they said "yes, of course we would!" However, they also say that the Bible can't be properly understood without the help of the Watchtower. Hmmm....

is that all that much different from saying:

"you must always listen to your pastor. He will help you understand the Bible properly.

Just a thought

I partially agree with you Ely, however, the JW's have written portions of the Bible to suit their views and have these bibles in their little briefcases as they go from house to house, whereas a person listening to the pastor preach something not in the bible he is holding is a different thing.

I don't get it, the Mennonites are like the liberal branch of the Amish and as far as i know they follow the bible. What do they have to do with JWs?
Btw on this forum we've talked about Spiritual Israel, JWs believe they are the real Israel.

JW's in my area area will not come to my house. I had the local Elders over about 1 year ago, and from that day forward, it has been few and far between.

The WT is one of the most sneaky org's out there. I pity the slaves of that *beast. .....


*Please note: This is not to say that all JW's are bad people, or "beast". But I believe the evidence shows the Governing body to be just what I called them...Beast.

Are you saying that they have themselves composed these portions, Allyn? Or are you merely saying that they have translated them differently from most translators?

In general, I have found the New World Translation to be a fair translation of the New Testament. There is a translational bias of course, as is obvious when you look, for example, at their translation of John 1:1.
But there is also translational bias on the part of Trinitarians --- even to the extent of inserting 1 John 5:7 into the text, a verse which had never been written by the apostle John, but was added as a marginal note many centuries later.

Collosians 1:16-17 (NWT). The word "other" is inserted in brackets to show that it's not in the Greek (they do this in their translation).

16 because by means of him all [other] things were created in the heavens and upon the earth, the things visible and the things invisible, no matter whether they are thrones or lordships or governments or authorities. All [other] things have been created through him and for him. 17 Also, he is before all [other] things and by means of him all [other] things were made to exist...

This is, of course, to fit their doctrine that Jesus is created and not eternal. Without the word "other" inserted into the text, this verse shows that Jesus can't be created, because He created "all" things.

The fact that "other" is placed in brackets seems to indicate that it was meant as a note, or explanation. I wonder whether it was meant to be "other" than the Father? Or other than His Son? I suspect the latter, since JWs believe Jesus was Michael the Archangel, the first and highest created being.

It is basically like the way most literal translations put things in italics to show that a particular word is not in the Greek, only this is not justified at all by the text and is not needed to understand it. It is there only to make it fit their theology.
