Reincarnation question
Re: Reincarnation question
Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” Matthew 16:13,14 ESV
Did not those who said that Jesus was John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets, believe that one of these was reincarnated as Jesus? Surely they did not believe that Jesus was one of these who had risen from the dead. For the resurrection was not expected until the last day:
John 11:24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”
And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” Matthew 16:13,14 ESV

Man judges a person by his past deeds, and administers penalties for his wrongdoing. God judges a person by his present character, and disciplines him that he may become righteous.

Re: Reincarnation question
No. Thanks for the reference.Yes, I read that explanation, too. Did those sites mention the quote (in blue) which I added to my post?
Thanks once more.From the Apocrypha:
"Now I was a child good by nature, and a good soul fell to my lot. Nay,rather, being good, I came into a body undefiled." (The Wisdom of Solomon 8:19-20)
This one was mentioned. I don't know about Jeremiah; that could be a reference to reincarnation. Elijah didn't die, so if he returned would it be reincarnation, per se? John the Baptist is even more puzzling. Jesus and John were once alive at the same time, and even knew and interacted with each other. Do you think they believed that a soul could be reincarnated into a body that already was alive? Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”

Thanks, again, for all your help, Paidion.

Re: Reincarnation question
Michelle, you believe and I believe that Elijah didn't die. But did those who asked the question so believe? For the Scripture does not say what happened to him after he was taken up.This one was mentioned. I don't know about Jeremiah; that could be a reference to reincarnation. Also, is it possible that those who asked the question were not aware that John the Baptist and Jesus had been alive at the same time? Yet, I concede that it is possible that they only meant that John's spirit somehow entered Jesus.

Re: Reincarnation question
Thanks for your thoughts, Paidion. It is interesting to think about what misconceptions were floating around at the time of Jesus' ministry, isn't it? I appreciate the opportunity to stretch my knowledge base a little bit.Paidion wrote: Michelle, you believe and I believe that Elijah didn't die. But did those who asked the question so believe? Re: Reincarnation question
To be fair, Douglas started this thread by presenting the possibility that reincarnation is part of God's plan, and asked for comments. Jill was offering her comments on reincarnation, which directly address Douglas' OP. We, however, are the ones who have taken this side trip, exploring a belief system from 2,000 years ago.Paidion wrote:Deleted

Thank you, Michelle. You are right, of course. I can hardly believe that I was so arrogant as to think that our "side trip" was the main theme of the thread. To be fair, Douglas started this thread by presenting the possibility that reincarnation is part of God's plan, and asked for comments. Jill, I regret what I wrote to you, and deleted those words.
