Is it common for Orthodox and Catholics to say "The Early Church Fathers thought such and such," but have no biblical basis for the so called teaching?
Such things as Christ died for death.
They say things like when it says that God has wrath or got angery that is just our perception he doesn't really have those attributes. He doesn't have just.
Christ died for death not for our sins.
God makes mistakes.
Jesus died on the cross. Did his duty and we don't need Him anymore.

I think if you search your heart and study scripture you will know the answer to that yourself. When you just stand back and look at what you asked doesn't it seem obvious some time?
I know my mom is catholic and her whole early family was. I was not raised Catholic and have spent many an hour trying to help her untwist things she has learned. I do not want to put down what you have said or written of these priests words, but I think you will "get it" just through common sense in the Lord and your own personal relationship with him ( I am assuming you do have one ).
I hope Im not out of line here. I know this is not a real intellectual answer but more of my opinion. I am just answering you one Christian to another.
You could pray on it too. Glow

Do you live in the Elmont in Westchester county in NY?
Anyway Christ conquered death and the bible says he died to save us from our sins.
I think few Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox really study scripture they just leave it up to their churches to interpret for them. And faith cometh by hearing the Word of God therefore i think few of them have a real relationship with Christ but rather with the physical presence of their church. I don't want to sound harsh but it almost resembles a type of idolatry because they reverence men and saints and physical things like statues. They say they don't but they act like they do from what i've seen.
And yes they rely heavely on the church father's, in fact they give it equal weight with scripture.

So true! I have sat down with my mom and gone over scripture till it could come out of her ears. But in the end if she ignores anything the priest is saying she feels she is being dammed. She is 83 yrs old and I still keep going over Gods grace and being saved does not incude works. Even though she went to a Catholic school when growing up, she learned very little scripture herself. Doing any of that on your own or even questioning the bible was treated very harshly. You were suppose to just listen to the priest, take his word for it, because he was appointed by God. She questioned one of the nuns one day and almost got kicked out of school. It made such an impression on her even though over 70 yrs ago she still has trouble just believing in Gods word vs a priest....sad glow
