i'm not a big fan of lawsuits, but i am kind of glad about this one. westboro baptist church is disgusting, for lack of a better word (IMO). of course the plaintiffs will never see a dime, but i suppose its a moral victory of sorts.

Thats right, TK. This had to be stopped and I hope this lawsuit victory does just that.

Wow. I'm definitely glad that Westboro was punished. But does anyone else see a potential slippery slope here?

Maybe the answer would be to make funerals/weddings/etc. private events instead of public events. That way they could be uninterrupted without freedom of speech being violated.

What do you guys think?

I deplore the tactics that Westboro Baptist uses; I believe they are just about as far from Christ-like as you can get. However, I agree with Rae that there may be a slippery slope here. I think that to the outside world they, the Phelps, are just an extreme version of the rest of us believers, and that many people would like to see all of our "controversial" speech checked.

I'm not really sure how much of a victory this is. I doubt that Westboro Baptist cares very much what the courts say about their activities. I don't think that any amount of money, even millions (if the family ever sees a penny of it,) would make up for the distress caused at the funeral by this group. And, once again, this nutty group is in the news which makes the rest of us look stupid. So... no one wins, in my opinion.
