Did Jesus Drink Alcohol?

Post by Biblegate » Sat Jun 15, 2019 10:50 pm

Did Jesus drink alcohol? That's what a caller asked Steve Gregg, host of The Narrow Path radio broadcast. Some say that drinking alcoholic beverages is a sin. What do you say?

There are many Christians who abstain from all alcohol, believing that's what they should do as a Christian. That's why many evangelicals don't use wine even for communion.

I myself am not an abstainer, although my mother and my four siblings were. But I never drink to excess. Even now in my old age I drink 3 oz of Bermuda rum mixed with a can of Coke zero, twice a week. That is the extent of my drinking.

I have been often asked by medical staff whether I drink. When I tell them 3oz. of rum with sugar-free coke twice a week, there is usually dead silence on their part. However, one nurse responded, "That shouldn't hurt you." And one other nurse said, "If I were retired, I'd be drinking every day!"

Man judges a person by his past deeds, and administers penalties for his wrongdoing. God judges a person by his present character, and disciplines him that he may become righteous.

Excellent response from Steve, there. The key with alcohol, as with many things, is moderation, exercising the virtue of temperance. If used with moderation, such drinks as wine are good for the body and the soul. The fact that Jesus Himself drank wine and chose, for his very FIRST miracle, the changing of water into wine (and doing so at a wedding feast) shows us that wine is, in itself, a good thing (it also shows us the beauty and value of marriage).
