Can God's Election be Rejected?

That day on the road to Damascus, when Jesus appeared and knocked Saul to the ground, could Saul have defied the heavenly vision and declined his calling? Was Saul chosen, or did he have a choice...or was it both?

Perhaps we agree that "the elect" are those who are chosen by God for a purpose. But why would being chosen compel the chosen ones to fulfill that purpose?

If a school boy chooses a particular boy to be on his baseball team, is that chosen boy compelled to join the team?

Because if it fit God's purposes then God could compel Paul. I don't know if God compelled Paul or not but either way doesn't bother me. God never gave man a sacred promise of free will.
