Did Jesus Drink Alcohol?

Jesus' detractors called Him a wine drinker. Did He deny it? Today, some say that the wine Jesus drank was non-alcoholic. Is that likely? What is the scriptural evidence in this matter? What were the customs of that culture? If Jesus actually drank fermented wine, did He sin by doing so?

Steve Gregg and a caller to the Narrow Path radio program discussed this topic. Take a look/listen at this brief video version of that discussion, then forward it to others who may be wondering if Jesus drank alcohol.

The year I attended a fundamentalist Bible school at the age of 21, the topic came up in a Christian Ethics class. The teacher mentioned that that Jesus drank wine. Then one of the students asked (rhetorically), "Yes, but what kind of wine was that?" (The student presumed that Jesus drank a kind of grape juice which was called "wine").

The teacher replied, "There's only one kind of wine, the fermented kind."

Correct. So when I wrote "fermented wine," I actually repeated myself. ;)

That reminds me of something Mark Twain wrote. He said, "Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself." :D

Only if drinking fermented wine is sinful.
