Didn't they recently intercept a comet using mathematical calculations? So your question is a good one. At what point do the calculations come under deeper scrutiny?
I am not sure where the "point" would be. But I certainly think the measurement tactics for distances that are supposedly millions and billions of light years away should "come under deeper scrutiny" than those which measure the objects of our Solar System (which are merely light minutes or light hours away). It's only about 16 light hours across the orbit of Neptune. The methods of determining the distances of the stars are completely different from those used in measuring the distances of the Sun, planets, and moons of our Solar System.
