Reading the Terms of Use

What do you do with these "I have read and agreed to the terms and conditions" checkboxes? I just dealt with one (15 minutes ago). I did not exactly "read" the terms. I generally try to skim the things to get the general idea (and to check for ad-ware or something sometimes), but often they're very long and I'm in a rush and I know it won't matter, and I just check it and move on. (Occasionally at work, I really have to read one carefully, and that's no fun.)

Is it a lie?

IMO it is not. I do not believe the people who put the terms and conditions in with the checkbox expect them to be read. Same thing with all those stupid "privacy notices" that our great government mandates businesses to waste time and money on.

That is all true. The lawyers have their checked box and everyone's happy, I guess.
