Is it okay for Christians to sell cigarettes, beer, wine, if they work in a store, say a grocery store or something? What about working for a place like Barnes and Nobles that sells books, sometimes even on witchcraft? Is that a compromise? The christian isn't making them buy the material, is it thus okay?

I cannot say what one should do in such cases, I can only say what I would do.
I would, if I could, avoid working in a store where I was expected to sell cigarettes.I feel I would be a factor in contributing negatively to the health of people. Both my parents-in-law died of smoke-related diseases, one of emphysema, and the other of lung cancer.
I would have the same problem if I were expected to sell witchcraft books.
Nevertheless, it is impossible to avoid being a factor in harmful or evil practices. Sometimes we have no choice. For example, by paying our taxes, we are contributing to the abortion of unborn children. Should we, therefore, refuse to pay taxes? We could, and go to prison for our conviction. Is that what God expects us to do?
I would have not have the same problem is selling alcholic beverages.
I, myself, drink them in moderation. Because Jesus drank wine and attended suppers, He was accused of being a "wine-bibber" and a "glutton". I once heard a preacher say that if Jesus had been an abstainer, He wouldn't have turned the water into wine. Rather, He would have turned the wine they already had, into water!
Yet, I know that many abuse alcohol, that it is a factor in fights, wife abuse, and the automobile collisions, and death to pedestrians. Would I, if I sold it, be in some way responsible for these deaths and abuse?
It is a very difficult question, and I think every disciple must seek the Lord as to what he should do. If you cannot act in faith selling these products, then perhaps the Lord will arrange for you to work elsewhere.
