pluck it out

Post by _Anonymous » Thu Oct 13, 2005 7:28 pm

what does it mean in Matthew when Jesus talks about if something offends, "pluck it out" referring to the eyes? Dont we all see someone
of the opposite sex and though we dont lust, we may think what a great looking person he/she is????????

IMHO Jesus is making a point about the seriousness of sin. Eyes do not cause us to sin any more than hands cause us to steal.

Yes, I think we all do if we are normal. Adultery in the heart is more than noticing an attractive person.

I don't know whether or not this is helpful in answering the question, but one needs to observe that "offends" has a different meaning today than it did in the 16th century, when the KJV was translated.

The Greek word so translated means "causes to stumble".
