I purchased several copies of Talbott's book, and have loaned out all but one. I haven't gotten them back! Looks as if I'll have to order some more.

Like me!

Paidion, "Universal Salvation? The Current Debate" is next on my list of books to buy. Have you had a chance to read it yet? If so, what do you think of it.

I loved it, Mort! It gave me a chance to better understand the arguments of those who believe in eternal torture ---- though it didn't help me to feel any more positive toward that horrific doctrine.

I thought Talbott's argument and final defence "took the cake", though unlike Talbott, I am loathe to identify myself as a "Universalist" since that appelation in our present time is usually understood as referring to a person who does not believe in God's judgment of anyone, and that everyone is acceptable to God in his present state, and will automatically go to heaven after death.

Talbott is not the only contributer who disbelieves in eternal torture. So there is a fair balance of contributors in various sections.

Hello Everyone,

This is a great discussion, and pardon me for getting into it late. I'm new here, and I want to wish you all greetings in the name of Our Lord, Jesus.

Did anyone mention 1 John 5:16-17 which discusses sin which is deadly, versus sin which is not deadly? I read through quickly, but didn't see it.

The Apostle John tell us in these verses: "If anyone sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal (deadly)." quote material is my emphasis

I think what the original poster stated was on to much truth. Surely, attacking a four-year old girl or boy would be a deadlier sin than say, gossiping.

I think that John's teaching certainly demonstrates to us that some sins are deadly, while others weaken our souls and make us greater targets for temptation and can lead eventually to deadly sin.

God bless,

Liseux

Greetings,

I just found this thread on Google while doing a search on Talbott.

I read Talbott's article "Universalism, Calvinism, and Arminianism: Some preliminary reflections." that Danny linked to above and basically disagree with him fully (though I won't explain why here).

Paidion linked to "The Inescapable Love of God" site on another thread where I assume we will talk about Talbott's ideas. That is, if I reply to Paidion; I probably will. Here's the thread linked at the page Paidion posted Talbott's site: http://www.wvss.com/forumc/viewtopic.ph ... &start=180

We're on page 14 now, long thread.
Rick
