Commentary Recommendation

Post by Brad » Mon Nov 26, 2018 11:26 pm

I'm sure this has been asked here before, but the search on this forum simply doesn't work. I'm looking for good commentary set recommendations. I'd like to add another to my Olive Tree Bible app. One requirement: not Calvinist / Reformed. I already have one and it's by far the majority view in modern evangelicalism anyway.

Search works OK for me:

Personally, these days, I benefit most from those that are kind of a cross between a language reference and a commentary. Basically that means Word Pictures in the New Testament by Robertson, Word Studies in the New Testament by Vincent, Expositor's Greek Testament by Nicoll, and Alford's Greek Testament. Second tier would be those that do more than just parrot a particular viewpoint, in particular Barnes' Notes and Philip Schaff's commentary, to name a couple.

IMHO Lange's commentary set can't be beat.

See here: https://www.logos.com/product/5759/lang ... scriptures

If you search and watch you should be able to find a good used set for a reasonable price.

For many years, I have used the Online Bible Program. You can download it to your computer, and have the Bible in many different translations. You can check several commentaries on any verse. Presently I have 34 versions including those in Greek, and the Septuagint. It is easy to search for any word or phrase, place parallel versions, one under the other or check commentaries. The commentaries that I have and can consult on any passage are: Barnes, Calvin, Adam Clarke, Electic Notes, Gill, Jamiesen, Faucette, and Brown (JFB), and Poole. There are teachings from famous writers. There are maps and charts, and even old school readerss. I have even the Quran on mine. There are many other features too numerous to mention—powerful.

You can download this program free!

Yeah, I guess that works. I tried "good commentary," and the results always reported "good excluded from results," and I got a million matches that weren't helpful.

I'm sure it's fine, but I've used Olive Tree Bible Reader for many years. Having the ability to take notes and highlight on any device and have it always saved in their cloud is priceless (and that part is free). Plus you can do all that other stuff too.

I don't like to buy a whole set. Since different volumes are by different authors, the quality is usually somewhat unbalanced. I prefer to make an independent decision with each book and I like to start by using this link to get ideas...

It seems to exclude any short word, which can be frustrating if you're trying to search for a short word. To get around that you can use Google to search any site by adding, for example, 'site:theos.org' to the search query. It works on Startpage.com too, and probably some other search engines.

Also, to get the above results, I used Advanced Search and searched titles only.
