Here is an example of the kind of problem I have with the preterist arguments. First Ed Stevens admits that not only must Revelations have been written prior to 70AD, but that John must have been martyred prior to 70AD, otherwise preterism is dealt a fatal blow. As proof of John's early martyrdom Stevens cites Jesus' statements in Matthew 20 and Mark 10 about James and John drinking the same cup Jesus was about to drink. If we accept Steven's argument that this necessarily meant John was martyred, this is still no proof at all that John did not live far past 70AD and suffer martyrdom at a later date. Seems to me the only necessity for John's supposed early martyrdom is to save preterism.
