Feast of Tabernacles

Brethren,
In the 37 years since I met the Lord, I have read alot of stuff on prophecy. After we started homeschooling in 1993, I saw increasing emphasis on the Jewish feasts and Christians ought to keep them (so some say). One of the lines of thought goes that Christ fulfilled passover, the birth of the church fulfilled Pentecost etc. Usually the end point in this line of thought is that the Feast of Tabernacles (in the fall?) prefigured Christ's return. I have a couple of questions --
1) is this a mainstream understanding in evangelical Christianity? or just Messianic teaching?
2) is this part and parcel of a certain view of end times (dispensational? premil? etc)
3) if this holds any water, how would tabernacles prefigure the 2nd coming?
I should say that the Bible church I grew up in in the 60s was infiltrated by dispensationalists in the early 70s. At the time, the people who had founded the church were alarmed at RB Thieme's writings coming in (Hal Lindsey's mentor). For 20 yrs my husband and I were in Plymouth Brethren fellowship which of course used the Scofield Bible but its "outlines" never made sense to me. I finally figured out that I was arminian, anabaptist, amil about 15 yrs ago from Bible and church history reading. After I heard Steve talk about partial preterist that made sense of many things that I had heard as a child, which didn't make sense under dispensational thinking, so I am rethinking all the teaching I had. Lord willing, I hope to work my way through the verse by verse teaching to clear up my thinking. The MP3s have been a great encouragement to me as I got about running our home, taking care of my elderly mother and doing much driving. They are very good listening wherever I have to go.
Thanks for your comments.
