If you knew nothing about theology and had no bias and looked at this statement , what would you think after reading all of the first verse of John?

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

I think I'd say "what do you meany by 'word'" and "what do you mean by 'beginning' "?

I think , the beginning of creation and to me "The Word" is like the breath of God, (Psalm 33).

I think it's pert near impossible for me to pretend that I know nothing about theology and have no bias.

Without even going into the 'beginning' bit, I would be confused, and wonder how the Word could be WITH God and BE God all at the same time.

Come to think of it, I'm still confused.
But, I'm not worried about it. I accept that my finite brain can't understand or explain the Creator of all things.

If I knew nothing about theology and had no bias and picked up a Bible and read that verse, I'd either close it up again because it seemed like a bunch of gobbledygook, or I would be like Ricky Ricardo and say "Lucy, you have some 'splainin' to do."

Let's face it, how can anyone reading it for the first time understand anything about it? Like Suzana said, I can't full understand it and I have been a Christian for years.

The Ethiopian required Divine intervention (the Holy Spirit with Philip) to understand Isaiah. The Disciples required Divine intervention on the road to Emmeaus (spelling?) (Jesus explaining Himself in the Scriptures).

So it is with all Believers, as Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.

And so therefore the Church is built by Christ, "not of works, lest any man should boast".

I, too, would have a problem with the Word being "with God" and also "being God." This would seem like a contradiction. So I would begin an investigation.

I would investigate what was said in the original language (Greek). If I did not know Greek, I would inquire. Then I would discover that "God" was used in two different ways in the same verse. From that, I would understand how the Word could be "with God" in one sense of "God" and "be God" in the other sense.

Paidion, I don't know Greek, so I'm inquiring. I don't know what the two different ways "God" is used in the verse. When you have time, could you explain? Thanks in advance.
