Calvin's Commentary on the Law (Doctrine of Life)

Anyone familiar with Calvin's commentary on Isaiah, and in particular the way he describes the Law as divided into three parts?

(Doctrine of Life)
(Threats & Promises)
(Doctrine of Grace)

I'm not familiar with this breakdown. What's the logical outcome of this view?
