I have "God" (links) in thread title for any stuff that may be about or include the (formal) Doctrine of God. I may include things related, like maybe on the Gospels, other theological.

Description - John P. Meier, a Catholic priest, is professor of New Testament at the University of Notre Dame. He is perhaps the foremost biblical scholar of his generation. Meier's work represents the first time an American Catholic biblical scholar has attempted a full-scale, rigorously scientific treatment of the "historical Jesus." By the "historical Jesus," Meier means the Jesus whom we can recover or reconstruct by using the tools of modern historical research. I read Meier's first of a four book series, Jesus: A Marginal Jew. Quite a lot could be said here. Meier's scholarship is simply excellent! He's funny too.

Blomberg's talk would be a better introduction to historcial Jesus studies (over against Meier, which is a bit more technical). Blomberg gives an overview of the history of historical Jesus studies up to the present (to 2004 anyway). Great stuff! And so is Craig funny also!

About the Course

This course examines the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) as an expression of the religious life and thought of ancient Israel, and a foundational document of Western civilization. A wide range of methodologies, including source criticism and the historical-critical school, tradition criticism, redaction criticism, and literary and canonical approaches are applied to the study and interpretation of the Bible. Special emphasis is placed on the Bible against the backdrop of its historical and cultural setting in the Ancient Near East.

I've heard this whole series and really enjoyed it! It's an 'academic' historical-critical overview of the OT, not a 'theological' course. Put another way, and as a kind of caveat to 'evangelicals'; some of what you hear here may not resonate with your theology (e.g., JEDP Theory of the OT, etc.). I'm somewhat theologically liberal, and found much, if not most, of what Prof Hayes said to be quite helpful! But to you who may be more conservative (or maybe even fundamentalists): I'm sure there are plenty of cool historical facts and other information in the course that would make it well worth a listen for you (though you would disagree at times).

Ironically, an atheist put tons of graphics to go with the lectures (maps, all kinds of stuff).
However, I don't recommend youtube, as there are sexually graphic images at certain points.
