Put on, Put off, Put to death?

Post by _SoaringEagle » Tue Nov 06, 2007 10:21 pm

In the following several passages, we read Paul talking about putting on, putting off, and putting to death. What does Paul have in mind and mean?

Rom 8:13 - For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Rom. 13:12,14 - The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light...But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

1 Cor. 15:53 - For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory."

Gal. 3:27 - For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Eph. 4:20 But you have not so learned Christ, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

Eph 6:11 - Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Col 3:5 - Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Col 3:10,12,14 - and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him...Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;..But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.
