What are some examples in the gospels of the frustration/disappointment that the Jews felt, or that Jesus' did/didn't do that they thought the Messiah should do/be. During his life. Examples in the gospels, not outside. (I'm working on a writing project, and am looking for texts.)

Some I'd already come up with.

# Jesus would not commit himself to be made a king.
> Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself. - John 6:15

# Jesus discouraged being promoted as Messiah
> And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” (Mark 1:43-44, ESV)

# Jesus said he would suffer and die
> And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him - Mark 8:31; Matthew 16:16, 21

The Jews thought that the Messiah would elevate Israel over the Gentile nations, and that Israel would rule over the Gentiles. Jesus indicated that His kingdom would not include all the Jews, and that Jewish unbelievers would be passed over in favor of Gentile believers (e.g., Matt.8:8-12 / Luke 4:21-28).

I think the biggest thing is the Messianic age, the interpretation of the OT prophets that the Messiah would bring in an age of great peace and prosperity with Israel as the head nation. Most modern Rabbi's I've listened to still hold this view about the Messiah.

At the beginning of his ministry, when Jesus read from the scroll in the synagogue in Nazareth, he angered the people. Luke 4, 28-30 "All the people in the synagogue were furious... they got up, drove him out of the town...to throw him down the cliff.

Verse (22) seems to indicate that people spoke well of him and were generally pleased with what he said. But Dr. Kenneth Bailey Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes states, (from Joachim Jeremias Jesus Promise to the Nations), that the dative case of the Greek word 'auto' can be used as a 'dative of advantage' or 'dative of disadvantage', and this is be taken from the context. So verse 22, if taken as disadvantage, could well read "And all witnessed against him, and were amazed a the words of mercy that came out of his mouth, and they said, "Is not this Joseph's son?""

So what got the people all stirred up? Bailey, again quoting Jeremias, states "...Jesus quotes 'to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord' but leaves out the second half of the verse, which reads, 'the day of vengeance of our God.' Bailey notes also that Jesus also left out 'He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted.' , and includes a line from Isaiah 58:6 'to release the oppressed'.

Bailey sums it all up with these comments:

With this in mind we can reconstruct the following. Jesus, the local boy, came to town as an itinerant rabbi and was given a chance to have his say. His audience of settlers understood the text of Isaiah 61 along with the lines just indicated [that is that Isaiah 61 was a significant national promise of deliverance from political oppression]. With everyone listening intently, Jesus chose this familiar and deeply beloved passage, but to their shock and amazement he stopped reading at the very point at which judgment and servitude is pronounced on the Gentiles, whom they, as a settler community, were there to displace. Their goal was to make 'Galilee of the Gentiles' into "Galilee of the Jews'. So why did Rabbi Jesus omit the verses that the audience thought were critical to the text" Stunned they awaited his comments on the reading.
It was not, however, simply a case of cutting the reading short, Jesus edited what he read. One phrase is omitted, a second is borrowed from Is 58:6 and the final sentence is cut in half, as noted...
When Jesus completed the reading, he rolled up the scroll, returned it to the synagogue official and sat down to comment on the text. His opening sentence was a lightning bolt. He announced the dawning of the messianic age as an event that was taking place in him before their eyes.... Their hostility was evident immediately .

To which Jesus, in anticipation said, ...No prophet is acceptable in his own country."

Clearly, the people of his day were looking for a Messiah who would liberate them from Roman control. Jesus announcement on this occasion shook them to the core.
