Jesus' Sharp Responses

Post by Julian » Fri Oct 23, 2009 1:57 pm

I was reading through Mark today and -- maybe it's just the translation, because I know exclamation points aren't seen in Greek, but some of Jesus' responses seem to castigate the apostles. I don't quite understand why Jesus responded so harshly at times. Jesus' responses are not outright mean, but the verses seem to convey Jesus' annoyance with the apostles' ignorance. After reading Mark 9:32, I had the impression that the apostles were afraid to ask Jesus a question for fear of being treated like idiots or yelled at for their lack of understanding. If the apostles were accustom to receiving warm, patient responses from Jesus, why would they be afraid to ask a question in Mark 9:32?

Maybe Jesus did intentionally treat them with harshness at times to prepare them for the future when he wouldn't be around ... to give them a kick in the pants, as it were?

Or perhaps they were too proud to ask and didn't want to look like idiots. Perhaps it's the same pride they seemingly exhibited in the next two verses. Notice they were silent with Jesus there as well.

Mar 9:33 And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, "What were you discussing on the way?"
Mar 9:34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.

I think they were taken by his miracles but were still self righteous and still unconverted, but smart enough to be embarrased.
