A High Day

Post by _AARONDISNEY » Thu Jun 29, 2006 7:24 pm

A man at my Church answered a question that I had long wondered about the other night.

Here's the question..
Jesus was to be 3 days and 3 night in the heart of the earth...just like Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish.
Well, when I counted this up it wasn't 3 days and three nights but
friday
friday night
saturday
saturday night
sunday

That's 3 days and 2 nights at best.

The man at my Church said that this scripture....
(John 19:31
31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
)
mentions a high day and that is where there are two sabbaths back to back and so Jesus would have actually been crucifiec on Thursday and so was laid in the tomb Thursday night.

That makes
Thursday night
Friday
Friday night
Saturday
Saturday night
Sunday

Three days and three nights.....

Have any of you heard this theory and if so does it seem to hold water.
You heard of this theory, Steve?

This man sometimes knows his stuff and sometimes I'm not so sure :wink:

If this is not what this means...What does Luke mean by a "High Day"?

Hi Aaron, The heart of the earth may not mean the grave , it may mean something more symbolic like "at the devil's mercy" so it may have started at Gethsamenee.

That's a strange way to see it (not to say it's not so, just strange). Is that the interpretation that you adopt?

Is 3 days and 3 nights some sort of odd way of saying 3 days whether all the parts of the day are present or not? That's also an interpretation I'd heard. Seemed a little odd to me but it could be just jumbled up in the cultures and would make perfect sense to those of that day.

Not likely because four times in the NT it says Jesus would be or did rise on the THIRD DAY. Fri, Sat, and Sunday is the third day.
Another explanation could be that in that jewish culture then, they considered any part of a day to count that day as a full day meaning 24 hours.

I believe this may help;

The answer is towards the bottom of the page. Notice the passover chart as well.
