Re: The Church Service
If all the people walking in the door on Sunday morning were ambitious about fellowship, and had a small group or a family of Christian friends that they actively met with, and were on that path of maturity and well being then great! But the average majority of Christians and visitors are 'not' lik...

Re: The Church Service
So what is "church" anyway and who decides, us or God? Jesus said that where two or three are gathered in His name, He is there. Would this not be "church"? If we arrive at the church building and go into a room with a small group for a bible study class with open discussion and prayer are we not i...

Re: The Church Service
[quote="mattrose"]Keep in mind that in many cases some of you are only arguing against a straw man. While many churches have a service that is dominated by the pastor (though sometimes that may be due to the refusal of others to participate, which IS a problem), most churches I know are not like tha...

Re: The Church Service
I think some churches do an adequate-to-good job at this. I'm thinking specifically of Bruxy Cavey's church where he allows for some Q&A at the end of many of his messages and then has 'home-group' study questions built right onto his sermon handout. Everyone is encouraged to participate in one of ...

Re: The Church Service
The non-interactive worship service would actually be fine if 'the church' was actively being 'the church' the rest of the week. I don't know that we can blame the 1 hour worship service for failing the church. If a Christian is, on a daily basis, interacting with fellow believers, reaching out to ...

Re: The Church Service
What I noticed in going back to church buildings just recently after a hiatus, is that the focus (at least where I was attending) is on education, in other words telling people what the Scriptures say. The interaction was minimal, the personal connection hard to find. They would do better, in my opi...

Re: Barclay was convinced (UR)
I am wondering-- if this thread gets to 100 pages will anyone have changed their view? If anyone does-- please fess up! Not that this is not all very interesting-- it is indeed. TK I never understand why people's view aren't, if not changing, developing. When we study are we not to grow in knowledge?

Re: Barclay was convinced
Steve - I think we all would condem the Spanish Inquisition, where people were tortured in an effort to get them to convert to Christianity. I guess in my mind the idea that God would use punishment to do the same thing smells wrong to me. That being said, I certainly understand parents using punis...

Re: Barclay was convinced
I'm curious, what is the UR take on Hebrews 6:4-6? How does the "impossible...to renew them to repentance" fit in with the idea that eventually everyone will repent? I take it as hyperbole meaning it's very difficult to repent. If you take it literally then it should also not be possible for a rich...
