Excellent! This validates my impression of the book as well.
It is great to read a balanced approach compared to many of the critiques based on theological technicalities.

Thanks for posting.

Re: Separation of Church and state

Great questions, Schoel - I posted them on my FB page without your name - please advise if this is not ok with you. This is completely ok. These ideas did not originate with me (see Anabaptists, 1st century believers, etc) and I stand on the shoulders of much greater men and women than I by repeati...

Re: Separation of Church and state

Hi Schoel, Certainly. It's a "knotty" problem because humans are involved. When theological paradigms are involved and cognitive dissonance rears its head, then the decisions will always be difficult. As far as persecution goes; I spent years growing up a JW. From the secular world nuclear an...

Re: Separation of Church and state

I would rather be a Christian in this country than any other one... While I agree it is preferable to follow Christ in this country from a persecution standpoint, statements from by brothers and sisters in areas of higher persecution seem to imply that they don't primarily wish for less suffering, ...

Re: Separation of Church and state

If you read on the subject, most founders believed very much that the Christian Church should be active in how this country was to be governed. The did however, want the government to stay out of the Church. Since we follow Christ alone and not the "founding fathers" of the US government, perhaps C...

Re: Separation of Church and state

We should take that rubbish about the Creator out of the Declaration of Independence. ... All I've read about our founders said the opposite of separation of church and state. That is a late addition to our history. I don't know of any mention of it until about 1948 ish. It seems to me that the big...

Re: Separation of Church and state

I think the obvious parallel between a soldier and Jesus is the practical (not theoretical) willingness to die for others. This is a trait that is worthy of honor and respect. The obvious parallel that you mention may be more mythical than reality. It assumes that soldiers are primarily motivated i...

Re: Separation of Church and state

These are my sentiments as well. The Jews considered the Roman standards, with their carved eagles, when brought into the holy city, to be blasphemous. I was in a church the other day full of American flags—with a carved eagle perched on the top of each flagpole. This is a serious blind spot for th...

Separation of Church and state

On the Sunday around Memorial day in the church my family attends, a video was played to honor veterans. It began with a description of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, then proceeded to claim that American soldiers have sacrificed in the same way. The implication was that military service and d...

Re: Advice for a struggling believer (hypothetical)

While we (Christians) are arguing about the wrong things, the gay lobby is passing laws to make us comply with their wishes. Music awards programs and the Rose Parade come to mind. Great children programs, don'tcha think. ... They should not be treated unfairly, but nobody should. Same sex marriage...
